Senegalese-American R&B singer-songwriter and record producer Akon (birth name Aliaune Thiam) was born on April 16, 1977, in Saint-Louis, Senegal. He was raised in a musical setting and taught to play several instruments including the djembe. He achieved mainstream success with his second album, Konvicted (2006), which featured tracks recorded with Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Styles P and T-Pain. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album also yielded two number-one hits, "I Wanna Love You" (feat. Snoop Dogg) and "Don't Matter". The album's single, "Smack That", was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards, in 2006.
