Grammy Award-winning American country music singer George Strait (birth name George Harvey Strait) was born on May 18, 1952, in Poteet, Texas, U.S. He began his musical interest while attending Pearsall High School, playing in a rock and roll garage band. His musical preference soon turned to country with singers Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Bob Wills, Hank Williams and Frank Sinatra influencing his style. And now, he is referred to as the "King of Country," and critics call Strait a living legend. In 1992, he released his most successful album, Pure Country, which yielded the hit singles, "Heartland" and "I Cross My Heart".
