Biography: Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (known as Gurrumul Yunupingu) born in 1970 is an indigenous Australian singer. He was born on the Elcho island, Northern Australia, about 350 miles away from Darwin. He comes from Galpu nation and belongs to Gumatj clan of the Yolngu. He was born blind but he never uses a guide dog a white cane. He is a multi instrumentalist, he plays drums, keyboards, guitar, but it’s his clear voice which attracted listeners in Australia. He knows only few words in English and sings stories about his land in his native languages and sometimes in English too. His debut album Gurrumul got ARIA Award for the Best World Music Album and Best Independent Release. It peaked at #4 on ARIA charts and reached #1 on iTunes Australia. Many famous musicians named themselves to be his fans, some of them are Elton John, Sting and Björk. He got the title Australian of the Year 2009 in Northern Territory.
