American soul, contemporary R&B and pop singer, songwriter and record producer Lionel Richie (birth name Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr.) was born on Tuskegee, Alabama, United States. By the late 1970s he had begun to accept songwriting commissions from other artists. He composed "Lady" for Kenny Rogers, which hit number 1 in 1980, and he produced Rogers' Share Your Love album the following year. Richie and Rogers have maintained a strong friendship in later years. Also in 1981, he sang a duet with Diana Ross in the theme song for the film Endless Love. He achieved mainstream success as a singer in 1982 with his self-titled debut album, Lionel Richie. The album's first single, "Truly", topped the Billboard Hot 100. Follow-up single, "You Are", reached number 4. And album's final single, "My Love", reached number 5. The album was also a hit, reaching number 1 on the Cashbox albums charts.
