English progressive rock, experimental rock and art rock musician and songwriter Peter Gabriel was born on 13 February 1950, in Chobham, Surrey, England. His father, Ralph Parton Gabriel, was an electrical engineer, and his mother, Edith Irene Allen, from a musical family, taught him to play the clarinet at an early age. In 1967, he founded a Grammy Award-winning English rock band Genesis with fellow Charterhouse School pupils Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, and drummer Chris Stewart. He achieved mainstream success as a solo singer with his most successful album, So (1986), which was produced by Canadian artist Daniel Lanois. Lanois had been previously known for his ambient collaborations with Brian Eno as well as producing U2 since 1984. The album spawned several hit singles such as "In Your Eyes", "Big Time", "Don't Give Up" (with Kate Bush), "Sledgehammer" and "Red Rain".
