English pop rock, new wave and synthpop band Tears for Fears from Bath, England, United Kingdom, was formed in 1981. The band comprises Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, they were initially associated with the New Wave synthesizer bands of the early 1980s but later branched out into mainstream rock and pop, which led to international chart success. They quickly gained popularity in 1983 with their breakthrough debut album, The Hurting, which peaked at number one on the UK Album Chart. The album also was certified Platinum by the BPI in 1985. It also spawned seven singles, "Suffer the Children", "Pale Shelter (You Don't Give Me Love)", "Mad World", "Change", "Pale Shelter", "Suffer the Children" and "Pale Shelter (You Don't Give Me Love)".
